Karin Schaefer is an abstract artist who uses a variety of color fields, textures, and instruments to create art that appears to be floating on canvases. In her meditation series Schaefer logs small drawings from her daily meditation into a journal. From that original entry a second drawing or painting is created in her studio. These pieces incorporate the dots and lines she has seen in her meditations “condensing and transposing an inner space onto paper.” The artist sees these works as “individual drawings that function as discrete pieces, a visual vocabulary of mind.” This work which originated as a “articulation of a contemplative practice” has led Schaefer to a new interest in abstract art.
Karin lives and works in Brooklyn, NY and South Egremont, MA. She is affiliated with the Sears Peyton Gallery in New York City and Los Angeles. Karin has been an artist in residence at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation twice.
